28M - Salary Negotiation Gone Wrong
I recently received a job offer as a Business Analyst. It’s an internal position in my department. For reference, I currently make $49k a year. My Director likes me and he’s strives to be a mentor. I’m about to get married next year and a new position and pay raise has been something I’ve been needing.
Long story short, the recruiter calls me and offers me $64k a year. I kindly counter with $80k. 2 days later, she follows up with $72k. I then asked for $75k (my final push).
I still haven’t heard back from her. However, my director pulled me aside and told me to “manage my expectations” and that in “our organization, we use an internal equity and parity approach, you’ve been classed at about $67k.
I was perplexed because I received a verbal offer from the recruiter for $72k, and for him to mention $67k like that, threw me off. There’s no way they can rescind an offer like that, can they? Idk I might need to escalate this to HR or our VP if the recruiter calls me and offers 67 instead of the 72 they originally offered.
Our organization is notorious for underpaying non-clinical workers. 72k will be enough for me to comfortably get a 2 bedroom with my fiancee and pay the bills. It’s been over a week and I haven’t heard back from the recruiter even after following up.
