Last month, I closed a $280K sourcing deal for a client in South America.

The product? Electrical insulation materials.

Here's why this matters — if a supplier fakes their test data or product specs, it's not just about losing money. It can cause regional power outages. People's safety depends on every spec being accurate.

So when this client asked me to find a reliable Chinese supplier, I told them straight up:

"I'm not sending you a list of names. I'll go to the factories myself."

Here's how it actually went:

Screened 40+ suppliers → shortlisted 6

Checked certifications, export history, technical capability.

Third-party factory audit

My client hired a professional inspection agency. I coordinated the whole thing — document review, workshop tour, staff interviews.

On-site product testing at the factory

This was the real game-changer. The inspection team ran multiple tests right there on the floor to verify the supplier's claimed specs.

Cross-checked everything with the CAD drawings

My engineering background finally came in handy lol. I could read the drawings myself, spot the inconsistencies, and ask the right questions.

There were a few bumps along the way. But in the end, the supplier we picked passed every test. Deal closed at $280K. Production is live now.

A lot of sourcing agents work from their laptops and send you Alibaba links. That's not how I do it.

I go to the factory. I read the drawings. I sit in the tests — watching from one side as the factory gets tested, and from the other side as the inspector does their job.

I've seen what happens when you skip these steps. That's why I don't.
