Will official basketball court dimensions ever become bigger in the far future?

One of basketball’s greatest strengths is its simplicity, you only need a hoop and a ball to play. However, one of its biggest drawbacks is the significant advantage height provides. While height isn’t everything and shorter players can still succeed, it remains one of the largest natural advantages in the sport.

If we look beyond basketball’s current traditions and rules, increasing the size of the court could help reduce that advantage. The rim is already 305cm high, which naturally favors taller players. On top of that, the court is small, allowing tall players to have an even greater impact.

A much larger court combined with an offside rule, one timeout per team and limited substitutions would reduce the significance of height and place greater importance on stamina, movement, spacing, and teamwork. It could also help basketball grow globally even more, as countries with shorter average populations would have a better chance of competing at the highest level.

If the court became so large that 5 on 5 felt too empty, the game could simply expand to 8 on 8 or 9 on 9. That would make teamwork far more important than individual performance and create a more tactical style of basketball, combined with one timeout per team and limited substitution. One player currently has a huge influence on a basketball team. Superstar players would still be important, but with a larger court and more players on the floor, they wouldn’t be able to influence the game to the same extent as they do today. As a result, the influence of coaches would also increase significantly compared with today.
