[Canada] VW denied my $2,800 AC repair goodwill claim on my 2022 ID.4 — 2,000 km over warranty. What would you do?
Hey everyone. Long post but I need to vent and genuinely want advice from people who've been through something similar.
The situation
I have a 2022 VW ID.4 Pro S. This summer I noticed the AC wasn't cooling at all. Took it to the dealer, they diagnosed leaking AC lines. Repair bill: $2,800 CAD. Out of my pocket.
I'm at 82,000 km. The New Vehicle Limited Warranty cuts off at 80,000 km. VW's is saying: not our problem.
Here's what makes me furious
I live in Canada. It was winter for months. You don't exactly notice your AC isn't working when it's -20°C outside. The leak was almost certainly gradual and developing for a long time before I hit 80,000 km — refrigerant doesn't just disappear overnight. But because I couldn't physically detect it during a Canadian winter, I missed my window.
On top of that, my VW app has been showing a "your vehicle may need attention – check diagnostics under the service tab" warning every single time I start the car. And when you go to the service tab? Nothing. No error. Just a ghost message at every startup that apparently a lot of ID.4 owners deal with. That warning was likely flagging this AC issue for a couple of months and gaslighting me the entire time
The annoying thing is AC refrigerant is not part of VW's standard maintenance inspection. So there was no routine service checkpoint that would have caught this. My dealer never checked it and we did all the service at the dealership.
I submitted a goodwill claim to VW Canada explaining all of this. Their response:
"Our review indicates that the A/C concern occurred after the vehicle had exceeded the applicable warranty mileage limit... our review of your request is now complete and our position remains unchanged."
That's it. Closed. Done. A form letter essentially telling me to get lost.
So — what would you do?
Do I pursue CAMVAP? File with the OPC? Take them to small claims court? Has anyone actually won a fight like this against VW Canada? I'm 2,000 km over the limit on a known issue that I had no reasonable way of detecting during a Canadian winter, and I'm out $2,800.
I also genuinely believe I was below 80000 when the error started, but my dealership says they don't have timestamps on the error logs.
Any advice, shared experiences, or even just solidarity appreciated. This is not the ownership experience I expected from a $60,000+ car.
