every once in a while you run into a record that makes you question whether everybody else has been wasting your damn time. this is one of those records. yusuf lateef takes a melody from a hollywood movie, doesn't try to reinvent it, doesn't cover it with ten pounds of jazz theory, and somehow ends up making something that feels more honest than ninety percent of the records sitting in the jazz section pretending to be important.

that's the funny part. the melody wasn't even his. alex north wrote it for *spartacus*. great soundtrack. perfectly respectable. then lateef gets hold of it and suddenly nobody gives a shit about the movie anymore. that's not an insult to kubrick or kirk douglas. it's just what happened. the song escaped. good luck putting it back in the box after that.

lateef never had the celebrity machine working for him the way miles did. coltrane became mythology. miles became miles. meanwhile lateef spent decades making astonishing records while half the listening public wandered off to buy another greatest hits compilation from somebody they'd already heard a thousand times. history isn't always wrong.

but it sure as hell gets lazy.

listen to the way he plays. there's absolutely no panic in it. no desperate need to prove he's the smartest guy in the room. jazz has suffered from that disease for years. somewhere along the way too many musicians started confusing complexity with meaning. suddenly every solo had to sound like somebody dumping a calculus textbook down a flight of stairs. good for you. you can play nine hundred notes in thirty seconds. did any of them actually say anything?

lateef never fell into that trap. he understood something that ought to be obvious but somehow isn't. people remember melodies. people remember emotion. nobody walks out of a concert humming your advanced harmonic substitutions. they remember the thing that punched them in the chest. that's the whole damn game.

and don't let the calm fool you. this isn't background music for people shopping for scented candles. there's tension all over this thing. it's restrained because it knows restraint is stronger than showing off. anybody can scream. anybody can play louder. it takes real confidence to leave space and trust the listener to meet you halfway.

that's harder than it sounds.

the older i get, the less interested i am in musicians trying to impress me. virtuosity can be really fucking boring. impressing people is easy. social media is full of it. music schools crank out virtuosos by the truckload. what gets harder every year is sounding like an actual human being. lateef does that without looking like he's trying, which is irritating if you're another musician because now you've got to live with the fact that he made it sound effortless.

that's probably why this record keeps surviving while so many technically brilliant albums have turned into expensive coasters. one of them wanted to be admired.

the other one just wanted to tell the truth.

funny how the truth keeps winning.
