Purist's way to set the GMT
This method ironically seems lost on a lot of GMT owners today. It's the purest, most historically genuine and most versatile way to use the complication. Here it is:
GMT hand stays on GMT/UTC all the time.
Local hour hand shows local time wherever you are.
Bezel becomes your conversion tool by using the UTC offset of the desired location. For example NYC = GMT-4 rotate the bezel 4 clicks clockwise; for Bangkok = GMT+7 rotate the bezel 7 clicks counterclockwise.
It's not just functional—it has an internal logic. Everything is referenced to a universal standard, and the bezel becomes an actual computational instrument rather than a decorative ring. That coherent design philosophy and engineering is what makes this watch a pioneer and an icon.
It's an elegant system because UTC never changes. The original GMT-Master was born in the jet age. Pilots used the 24-hour hand as a "zero" if you will. UTC (then called GMT) was that zero. Everywhere else was an offset from it, easily calculated.
Now downvote me into oblivion and tell me this is bullshit lol
