What should pedestrians do if hit by a car?

Traffic and Parking

Location: New Jersey

This happened several years ago, and not meant for that situation. But I don’t know how I should have handled it. I’m blind, have never driven, and don’t have any kind of car insurance. A few years ago I was hit while crossing a street. I wasn’t badly hurt? Didn’t hit my head. Although when I went to the ER later I had some injuries. But I was stunned and disoriented.

The driver stopped mostly to make sure I wasn’t dead. Then drove off. When I went to the hospital they wanted my car insurance, but I don’t have it. And they were confused and told me my health insurance might not cover it? The insurance did end up covering it. But I was told there’s something called personal insurance or something that’s associated with car insurance that covers the driver in other instances of vehicular accidents.

Obviously I’m hoping to get hit by a car again, but if I am, what am I supposed to do? What does getting a drivers information even mean? I know my husband (he drives) says he shares information with other motorists when there’s a collision but I’ve never really considered what that means.

I just want to have a fallback plan in my head. When I got hit I was stunned and not thinking clearly. I can only assume that will probably be reaction should something happen again. So knowing what to do at least gives me a quick: If hit by car, then…

Thank you!

(This ain’t really important, but in the case of me getting hit a few years ago, I was in the right of way. I understand pedestrian laws and traffic patterns. Typically I’m a very safe traveler. The person made a left on red without stopping.)
