A letter to my old dog

Poetry

Not a writer by any means, my dog was unwell recently and I was catastrophizing as you do 😅 (she is fine)

Message for my Lexi

That she’ll never understand
A message for my lex dog
That she’ll never comprehend

Hi Lexi puppy
That’s daddy’s name for you
I prefer lex lex,
Lexi girl, Lexus too

I’m so happy you came to us
All the way from afar [replaced place name because it’s very identifiable]
I wish I knew what happened there,
What made you the dog you are

The cheeky little feisty bitch
That drives us up the wall
The leanest, meanest, naughtiest little puppy of them all

But none of that-all matters
Since you came into our home
Straight off a Qantas cargo plane
Poor lex dog, all alone

Soon you came to trust us
And that must’ve been so hard
But once you learned we loved you so
You never wanted to be apart

Remember when we’d leave the house,
You’d steal shoes from the rack
And curl up with them on the couch
all day til we got back

We taught you ‘Sit’ and ‘Stay’, ‘Roll over’,
Other words you learned on your own
Like ‘treat’ and ‘walk’ and ‘do you wanna…’,
Or really anything in that tone

I never thought I’d think of a dog
As sensitive, or true
But time and again you prove me wrong
I’ve had to change my tune

Some days I would be sad or mad,
I’d never let it show
Yet there you’d be, little quiet companion,
Somehow you’d always know

You are a special little thing,
My darling lexi girl
And if I could I really would
Give you the whole wide world
