Can compression socks be too tight?

I've broken my foot and ankle twice in the last year, so I've got a range of compression socks and tube stockings all over the place from different stages of healing. I'm 5 weeks post op for a trimal and tonight I slipped on an old compression stocking I found in my drawer. It felt great, a little tighter than what I've been wearing but not bad. An hour later I was in severe discomfort, aching pain, couldn't get comfortable - realised it might be the stocking. Slipped it off and things started to improve. Is it possible for a compression stocking/sock to be too tight and to cause pain in this way?
