Old Bailey Case Draws Attention on London Estate
BBC Evening News — April 8, 1977

[Opening shot: A narrow South London street. Rows of worn brick flats. Children play in a courtyard. Laundry hangs between buildings. The sound of traffic in the distance.]
Reporter (voice-over):
We are on a narrow street in a south London housing estate, where residents have been following the trial of a 17-year-old accused of offences involving a young member of his family.
[Camera moves slowly across the estate. A woman closes a window. Children continue playing below, unaware of the attention surrounding the block.]
Reporter (voice-over):
Neighbours say the young man had only lived in the area for a relatively short time. Some describe him as quiet and polite; others say there was little about him that stood out.
[A man steps out from a first-floor doorway. He adjusts his cardigan before speaking to the camera.]
Retired Accountant:
One doesn’t quite know what to make of it. Young people these days — it seems they’ve lost any sense of decency. You hear about these things and you can’t help wondering what the world is coming to.
[Cut to the courtyard. A woman holds her youngest child close as she watches the camera.]
Neighbour:
I don’t know what to think. I worry about my own children. You hear whispers about what has happened, and it makes you look twice at everyone. I just want them to be safe.

Reporter (voice-over):
Despite the defendant’s modest background, the defence has assembled an unusually distinguished legal team, including the London firm Talbot-Cavendish & Co. and Queen’s Counsel Alistair Vance.
The unusual circumstances of the case have prompted questions among residents.
[Sound: street noise fades. The reporter’s voice becomes quieter.]
Reporter (voice-over):
As in many cases involving young children, parts of the evidence have been heard in private, and reporting restrictions limit what can be disclosed.
Even so, some residents have been left wondering whether differences of wealth and background may shape the way a case is perceived.
[Camera returns to the estate. Children are playing on a swing set. A football rolls across the courtyard.]
Reporter (on camera):
For the people who live here, life is normally a matter of work, home, and getting by.
But now this small courtyard has become the setting for a case that raises difficult questions about responsibility, family, and the protection of children.
The trial is expected to continue for several more days, and residents — like the wider public — are left to follow developments.
[Fade out. Sound of children laughing. Distant traffic continues.]
