Forty years old, born and raised in rural America, he was the kind of man people described as stern before they ever described him as friendly. Traditional to a fault, blunt, grumpy most mornings, and convinced the world had gotten far too soft. He was a veteran for the US marines - a fairly old school, patriotic boomer as his girlfriends called him.

The old pickup truck was spotless. The lawn was trimmed perfectly. Everything had a place, and Mark expected people to have one too.

Shahnaz and Jenny had just graduated college together after four years of being inseparable. Both were Asian international students who’d gone from classmates, to roommates, to best friends. Shahnaz was bubbly, expressive, emotional, and always trying to brighten the mood whenever Mark got into one of his lectures.

Jenny was quieter, more sarcastic, academically sharp, and loved teasing him just enough to make him grumble under his breath.

Mark wasn’t particularly romantic. He showed affection by fixing things, making sure they got home safely, grilling dinner every Sunday, and reminding them to lock the doors at night. He’d complain the entire time… but he’d do it anyway.

The arrangement confused nearly everyone who knew them. Three completely different personalities somehow made it work through constant banter, eye-rolls, stubbornness, and the occasional heartfelt moment.
