**Lantern World: The First Light — Chapter Two: “The Kitchen Light” \[OC\]**
*“Love had never arrived all at once. It had arrived one noticed thing at a time.”*
Good morning, everyone. 🌾
*Lantern World* is a modern literary romance set in a quiet farming community, exploring the extraordinary love that can grow from ordinary moments that are truly noticed.
In Chapter Two, James returns from the lake to the warmth of his family’s farmhouse kitchen. Over an ordinary breakfast, a single name quietly changes the direction of his day, carrying him back to a childhood memory that has been waiting for years to be remembered. By the time he reaches for his truck keys, every familiar street in town feels different.
Alongside the chapter, I wanted to share two companion illustrations that have become “mirror” images for the story: one capturing a childhood moment that quietly shaped two hearts, and another of James sitting at the kitchen table, lost in the reflection of a morning coffee.
I hope this chapter offers you a quiet place to pause for a few minutes today.
I’d love to hear your thoughts❣️

CHAPTER TWO: The Kitchen Light

The Kitchen Light

The screen door sighed as James pulled it open.

Not a squeak.

Not a complaint.

A long, familiar breath that seemed to say only one thing.

Welcome home.

Morning lived differently inside the farmhouse.

Sunlight poured through the lace curtains above the kitchen sink, scattering delicate patterns across worn pine floorboards polished smooth by generations of footsteps. Dust drifted lazily through the golden beams, rising and falling with invisible currents until it looked less like dust than tiny fragments of the morning itself.

The kitchen spoke in quieter ways.

Fresh coffee.

Bacon beginning to crisp in a cast-iron skillet.

Bread warming in the oven.

Black pepper.

A hint of cinnamon from somewhere he couldn’t place.

The faint earthy scent of old wooden cupboards that no amount of polishing had ever managed to erase.

It smelled exactly the way home was supposed to smell.

From a radio resting atop the icebox came the gentle murmur of a familiar announcer before an old swing tune floated softly into the room. The volume was turned so low it barely asked to be heard.

It simply kept the silence company.

His mother stood at the stove with one hand resting lightly on the handle of a black cast-iron skillet polished by years of faithful use. Wisps of bacon smoke curled upward before dissolving into the morning light.

She never turned around.

She didn’t need to.

“Your coffee’s cold.”

James looked down into the mug.

The dark surface reflected the kitchen window instead of steam.

“So it is.”

“I made another.”

“I had a feeling you would.”

“I always do.”

Only then did she glance over her shoulder.

Her smile arrived quietly, as though she’d been wearing it all morning.

“There you are.”

Three simple words.

No celebration.

No questions about the drive home.

No fuss over how long he’d been away.

Just the gentle certainty that the empty chair at the breakfast table had finally been filled again.

James crossed the room without thinking.

She reached up and brushed one unruly curl back from his forehead with fingertips still warm from the skillet.

It was such an ordinary gesture that he almost missed the way it settled something inside him.

“You’ve been to the dock.”

He nodded.

“It looked different.”

She laughed softly.

“No.”

She slid two strips of bacon onto a waiting plate.

“It looked the same.”

She met his eyes.

“You’re the one that’s different.”

The words lingered between them.

College had changed him in dozens of small, invisible ways.

It had taught him to walk faster.

To glance at his watch.

To mistake being busy for being important.

Yet standing here…

Listening to the radio.

Watching bacon curl gently in the skillet.

Feeling the memory of his mother’s fingertips still lingering against his hair…

He wondered whether any of those changes had ever really belonged to him.

She placed a fresh mug on the table.

Steam rose in slow ribbons.

“There.”

She smiled.

“Now you’re properly home.”

James wrapped both hands around the warm ceramic.

Outside, a mourning dove called from somewhere near the garden.

His mother listened for a moment before speaking again.

“It seems…”

She spread butter slowly across a slice of warm bread.

“…Evie’s home for the summer too.”

The kitchen grew impossibly still.

Not because the radio stopped.

It didn’t.

Not because the bacon quit sizzling.

It hadn’t.

The sounds continued exactly as they had a heartbeat before.

Only James no longer heard them.

Her name moved through him with the quiet force of something that had been waiting years for permission to return.

Evie.

He hadn’t spoken it aloud.

Hadn’t needed to.

Some names never really leave you.

They simply settle so deeply into the heart that they become part of the silence.

His fingers tightened unconsciously around the warm mug.

“She came by the market yesterday,” his mother continued gently, pretending to fuss with the butter dish instead of watching her son. “Helped old Mrs. Delaney carry two bags of groceries clear across the parking lot.”

A smile touched her lips.

“Some things don’t change.”

James lowered his eyes to the coffee.

Its surface had gone perfectly still again.

For a fleeting moment, he saw not his own reflection…

…but a little girl standing ankle-deep in the lake.

She couldn’t have been more than ten.

Her dark curls had escaped whatever ribbon she’d started the morning wearing. Mud streaked one shin. One shoelace trailed forgotten behind her as she stood holding something cupped carefully between both hands.

“James!”

She was calling to him from the shallows.

“Hurry!”

He remembered splashing toward her with all the urgency only children could summon.

“What?”

“Don’t scare it.”

“What is it?”

She slowly opened her hands.

Inside rested a dragonfly.

Its brilliant blue body shimmered like a piece of the summer sky that had somehow folded itself small enough to fit inside her palms.

Its wings were still.

Not broken.

Only tired.

James remembered whispering without understanding why.

“I think it’s hurt.”

“So do I.”

She looked down at it with such impossible tenderness that the whole world seemed to grow quieter around her.

“What do we do?”

He shrugged.

She thought for a very long time.

Then smiled.

“I think…”

She lifted her hands toward the morning sun.

“…we just let it know it isn’t alone.”

Neither of them spoke after that.

They simply stood together in the warm water while sunlight slowly reached the tiny creature resting between her fingers.

After several minutes…

The dragonfly stirred.

One wing.

Then the other.

Without warning, it lifted into the air.

It circled them once.

Twice.

Before disappearing across the lake.

Evie laughed.

Not because they had rescued it.

Because they’d been allowed to witness it leave.

James had watched her instead of the dragonfly.

Watched the sunlight catch the loose curls around her face.

Watched the way she celebrated another living thing’s freedom as though it were the happiest ending she could imagine.

He hadn’t known the word for it then.

Children almost never do.

He only knew that, from that morning forward…

Whenever he discovered something beautiful—

A feather.

A shell.

A butterfly.

The first ripe blackberry.

A family of ducklings.

His first thought was always the same.

I wonder if Evie has seen this.

Years later…

He would finally understand.

Love had never arrived all at once.

It had arrived one noticed thing at a time.

“James?”

His mother’s voice gently returned him to the kitchen.

He blinked.

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

She smiled knowingly.

“I wasn’t talking anymore.”

He laughed quietly, rubbing the back of his neck.

“I drifted.”

“You always did.”

She crossed to the old drawer beside the refrigerator and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“I need a favor.”

She handed him the list.

Eggs.

Coffee.

Fence staples.

A new hinge for the garden gate.

Pick up Mrs. Carter’s pie plate from the bakery.

Nothing remarkable.

Just the ordinary errands that quietly stitched a small town together.

“You don’t have to do them all today.”

“I know.”

“But you will.”

He nodded.

Because she was right.

He folded the list and slipped it into his back pocket.

The shell rested there already.

For one brief second, his fingertips brushed its smooth edge through the fabric.

He hadn’t realized he’d carried the morning home with him.

His mother reached for the empty plate.

Almost casually, she added,

“The florist said Evie’s been helping her aunt this week.”

James looked toward the kitchen window.

The florist shop stood on the east end of Main Street.

The hardware store was only two doors away.

The hinge for the garden gate would take him there.

Not tomorrow.

Not next week.

This afternoon.

His mother said nothing more.

She didn’t have to.

Outside, the gravel road disappeared between rows of old maples before bending gently toward town.

For years, every familiar street had simply led home.

Today…

For the first time in a very long time…

Every one of them led toward Evie.

He reached for the truck keys hanging from the little wooden hook beside the back door.

They jingled softly in his hand.

Outside, the morning had fully awakened.

The world was waiting.
