Need Help

I have been selfhosting for a little while now and recently built a from scratch TrueNAS server. I have family and friends (most are not technical) that are asking for access to some of my services, like Mealie, Immich, Plex (Yes I have a Lifetime Premium), ect. I really dont want to open my local firewall to the world and keeping up with services like Tailscale is to much for the technically challenged, like my parents. So I am considering tossing a VPS into the mix, but I have some questions.

  • First, any recommendations on a service? Looking at Ionos right now
  • I would like to move some services to the VPS, like Mealie, and yet just use the VPS as a passthrough to other services that are hosted on my local network, like Plex or Immich. I assume thats not an issue?
  • If I start with the smallest plan and host something like Mealie can I scale up and back down as needed without reinstalling other services? For example, I want to spin up a game server for a month. Can I move up to a higher plan with something like 16 or 32 GB RAM, and then drop back down to a 4GB plan the following without impacting Mealie and my pass-through apps?
  • For the connection between my local network and the VPS, is WireGuard or something like Pangolin the best option?

I would love some details on what you all are doing, if your doing something similar. I want to provide a good service to my users, but I also want to ensure the security of my home network and data. Thanks!!
