I ignored every red flag because I loved him. Now I’m left wondering what the hell any of it was.

This is going to be long because there isn’t a short version.
I gave this relationship everything I had, and I genuinely don’t know how I walked away feeling like I was the problem.
From the beginning, I loved hard. I hyped him up, reassured him, celebrated his wins, sat with him through his lows, respected his need for space, and constantly tried to make him feel loved. If he was struggling mentally, I was there. If he needed encouragement, I gave it. If he wanted to be left alone, I respected it even when it hurt me.
What I got back was inconsistency.
He’d disappear. He’d go quiet. He’d tell me he needed space, and I’d give it because I didn’t want to push him. But somehow there was never room for my feelings. If I needed reassurance or communication, I felt like I was asking for too much. I spent so much time worrying about overwhelming him that I stopped expressing what I needed altogether.
Every conversation about my feelings somehow ended up revolving around his.
Then came the lies.
Not little white lies. Things that completely changed how I viewed parts of our relationship. Every time I’d start rebuilding trust, something else would happen. I kept believing apologies because I loved him more than I loved protecting myself.
There was neglect too.
I can’t count how many times I sat staring at my phone wondering why the person who claimed to love me couldn’t take ten seconds to check in. I’d spend hours wondering if he was okay while he seemed perfectly capable of going about his day without giving me a second thought.
I started making excuses for everything.
“He’s stressed.”
“He’s depressed.”
“He’s overwhelmed.”
“He’s tired.”
Maybe sometimes those things were true. But after a while they became the explanation for everything while my hurt was treated like another problem he had to deal with.
I also ignored things I never thought I’d ignore because I wanted to believe the man I loved would eventually become the man I kept seeing glimpses of. Instead, I kept falling in love with potential while accepting reality.
I lost myself.
I became the one constantly compromising.
The one apologizing.
The one trying to communicate.
The one trying to fix things.
The one trying to understand.
The one giving chance after chance after chance.
And I don’t think he ever realized how much I was sacrificing just to keep us together.
The worst part is that I don’t even recognize the person I became. I questioned my sanity. I questioned whether I was too emotional, too needy, too sensitive. I spent so much time trying to become easier to love that I forgot relationships aren’t supposed to require you to shrink yourself.
I’m not claiming I was perfect. I had my own flaws. I overthought things. I cried. I wanted reassurance. I got frustrated. But I never lied to him. I never intentionally made him question where he stood with me. I never made him beg for basic communication. I never made him feel like loving me was an inconvenience.
Now it’s over.
And instead of grieving the relationship, I think I’m grieving the version of him that I kept hoping was real.
I loved someone who kept showing me with his actions that I wasn’t a priority, and I kept convincing myself that if I loved harder, waited longer, forgave more, or accepted less, eventually things would change.
They didn’t.
Looking back, I don’t think the breakup is what hurts the most.
It’s realizing how much of myself I handed over to someone who couldn’t or wouldn’t meet me halfway.
If you’ve read this far, thank you. I’m not looking for people to attack him. I’m trying to understand how so many of us end up accepting less than we deserve while convincing ourselves it’s love.
