I know I know, everyone says their favorite band is “underrated” but come on. This band deserved more than a one hit wonder status.

I became a huge fan of Marcy Playground when I was around 12 years old. I am now 31. Clearly I’m too young to have ever heard their hit song Sex and Candy when it was first released in 1997.

After hearing Sex and Candy, I loved it so much, that I downloaded every song I could find of theirs off of Limewire, and the family computer succumbing to it’s newly acquired virus was just a sacrifice I was willing to make.

I think I had most of their songs from their self titled album, and I found every single one to be a unique and certified banger.

As I got older and music got more accessible, I realized that every album of theirs was a no-skip album. And I mean it wholeheartedly when I say not a single one of their albums is anything less than a no-skip album.

With Indie music where it is today, I have to wonder if their songs got released right now, would they be a popular band in the indie scene? Were they ahead of their time or were they behind the times?

Some reasons I love them:
1. Their sound is so unique. There’s almost a psychedelic 60s inspired sound mixed with 90s alt, with a super dreamy feel.
2. Lyrically, there is no band I love more. The darkness mixed with the upbeat and almost goofiness is really my cup of tea.
3. The simple song styles. Easy to sing along to. Learned to play guitar with a lot of their songs.
4. John Wozniak’s unusual vocal style - love it.

So I’m wondering how did they not take off like so many other bands of the time? Were they just in the wrong time? If they would have emerged with the same sound earlier or later, would they have caught on? Do you think there is validity to them being insanely underrated or do you think they really are exactly the kind of band that becomes a one hit wonder? Is their music actually ass and I have an acquired taste? Is Marcy Playground actually a figment of my imagination and nobody knows what I’m talking about?

Interested in everyone’s thoughts.
