I love true crime and solving mysteries, what career could suit me?
Hi everyone,
I’m trying to figure out what to major in:
I’ve been obsessed with true crime, unsolved disappearances, and criminal investigations for years. If I could pick any job in the world, I’d probably become a detective.
The problem is that in my country there isn’t really a career that’s equivalent to what people usually picture when they think of a detective.
The only real way to investigate crimes is either to join law enforcement (which I’ve ruled out because I don’t really like the philosophy and culture of police here) or become a prosecutor.
The thing is, becoming a prosecutor means getting a law degree and then passing an extremely competitive national exam.
I’ve read a fair amount of law textbooks, and while I do find it interesting, I don’t think it’s what actually draws me to this field.
What I love is the investigative side: figuring out what happened, connecting the dots, interviewing people, analyzing evidence, and getting to the truth.
I’m much less interested in the legal side of things, like criminal procedure, sentencing, or arguing cases in court.
What worries me is that if I didn’t make it through the prosecutor exam, I’d be left with a law degree that isn’t very transferable internationally, and in my country the legal job market is already pretty saturated.
Lately I’ve also been considering medical school with the goal of specializing in psychiatry.
I’m genuinely fascinated by the human mind, and I feel like psychiatry could still let me work in a field that’s connected to crime and investigations, even if it’s in a much more indirect way.
Point is most of the other subjects feel pretty indifferent to me and I’m afraid I’d end up hating the coursework.
I’m honestly feeling pretty stuck.
Has anyone else been in a similar position? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
