What happens to PhD scholars at IITKGP if their supervisor resigns?

Can anyone share what usually happens to PhD scholars in IITs if their supervisor resigns while they are still pursuing their PhD? Do the research scholars get allotted to a new supervisor, or is there a provision for them to continue under the same professor after they leave the institute?
