Planning to travel to Kerala mid August

We are planning to travel to Kerala mid August with elders and kids. Please recommend a good place for relaxation, sight seeing, hotel, tours, resraurants, transportation - should we rent a car or hire driver, things to do, souvenir shopping etc. What is the weather like in August? Is this a good time to visit Kerala?
