**Silk-Reeling Hands**

缠丝手

The practice of Silk-Reeling Hands is, in essence, the practice of drawing circles.

In the beginning, the circles should be large and full. As the practice develops, they can gradually become medium-sized and then smaller.

But Silk-Reeling Hands is not only practiced with the hands. It is practiced through the body, and even more deeply, through the mind.

For this reason, highly effective Tai Chi training can be understood through three levels of Silk-Reeling:

**Silk-Reeling of the Hands.**
**Silk-Reeling of the Body.**
**Silk-Reeling of the Mind.**

**1. Silk-Reeling of the Hands**

This can be practiced while walking, standing, sitting, or lying down.

Begin by drawing circles with the hands. Learn to recognize where the movement expresses **Yang** and where it expresses **Yin**; what is following and what is reversing.

The circles should become continuous, even, and natural.

**2. Silk-Reeling of the Body**

Maintain an upright and centered posture, with the breath settled into the lower abdomen.

Although the body is moving through the spiraling action, the essential principles of the posture must never be lost.

Let the body lead the arms and hands through the Silk-Reeling movement. Turn the waist and shift the center of gravity from side to side.

Through this practice, the body learns to move the arms as one integrated whole, developing a unified expression of strength throughout the body.

**3. Silk-Reeling of the Mind**

Silk-Reeling also exists in the mind and intention.

Use your awareness to feel the movement of the arms as they trace their circular paths through space.

Sense the subtle waves and circular field created by the movement, while keeping your attention focused on the fingers as they lead and guide the turning action.

With continued practice, you may begin to notice subtle sensations: a tingling or buzzing feeling in the fingers, warmth in the center of the palms, and the distinctive sense of spiraling force as the movement turns and winds through the body.

Silk-Reeling Hands is a fundamental movement in Tai Chi training and one of its core methods of practice. **Cloud Hands** is one of the most recognizable expressions of this principle.

The movements of Silk-Reeling Hands are simple and easy to learn, yet their potential benefits are profound.

The practice requires highly focused attention while allowing the central nervous system to deeply relax.

It can help promote the free flow of the body’s internal pathways, support the functions of the internal organs, and condition the skin, bones, and joints. It can also cultivate mental clarity, support cognitive vitality, help restore emotional balance, and nurture the mind and character.

⸻

**Closing Line**

**Silk-Reeling is not only in the hands, but in the body; not only in the body, but in the mind. When the hands draw the circle, the body moves as one, and the mind enters the movement, the true essence of Tai Chi begins to emerge.**
