Mulholland Drive (2001) – Fantastic, Dreamy, Bizarre. What Just Happened?

My main takeaways from the movie are this: In the beginning, we have Betty and Rita. Betty is an aspiring movie star, and the two of them form a close relationship. There is a scene where they go to someone’s house that they think might belong to Betty, but when they get there, they find a dead girl.

Rita opens a box, and then suddenly disappears, and everything in the movie changes. Now she’s the one who is a movie star, and she is apparently in a relationship with the director we see earlier in the film.

There is now another blonde girl who seems to resemble Betty, but she is a very different kind of person. She seems to live an average, depressed, low-income life in a run-down apartment, but she is friends with Rita. At the dinner party near the end, she seems extremely jealous of Rita being with the film director. Then there is a scene where she seems to want to have Rita killed by the hitman we saw earlier in the film.

There are other parts of the film as well, but there is so much going on that it’s difficult to keep track of everything. I don’t know what it all means, but that’s the general gist of what I took away from it.
