AIO My wife kind of hides her life in front of her old friends
My wife (F24) and I (M26) have been married for two years and have a one-year-old child.
We’ve both had all our social media accounts deactivated for quite some time now because we don’t want to be exposed to that mind-numbing content, and we don’t want to set a bad example for our child by constantly being glued to our phones. We only use WhatsApp to communicate with family and friends. We both only have friends of the same gender because we haven’t hung out in “friend groups” or anything like that for a long time, since we moved away from our hometowns (We’re from different cities and never had mutual friends).
Yesterday, a longtime friend of hers (the two of them are in constant contact) messaged her saying that an old classmate (M) had reached out to her (the friend). He asked what was going on with my wife because she couldn’t be reached anywhere and had “gone off the grid.” Her Instagram account has been deleted; she only has a Snapchat account left, but she doesn’t use it, and the app isn’t even installed on her phone.
She then told me that she’s curious about what he suddenly wants and was thinking about what her friend should write to him so it doesn’t come across as weird when she listens to the audio message on Snapchat.
I told her she should just listen to it and say to him that her friend had let her know. In the audio message, he started some small talk along the lines of: “Just wanted to check in. If you have a boyfriend and this comes off as weird, I’m sorry, but how are you and how’s life going?”
She replied that she was doing well and that her friend had told her he’d been trying to reach her.
I don’t know exactly what was written after that, but she said she had casually mentioned that she has a boyfriend. That came across as kind of weird, because we’re married, and she also mentions to new people at daycare or places like that that she has a husband. It wasn’t the first time something like that came across as strange, because she’s kind of been avoiding meeting people from her hometown (except for her close friends) and seems to have a problem with them knowing that she’s married and has a child.
I’ve brought this up with her before, and she said she just doesn’t want people to talk about her behind her back. Anyway, I asked her again this time why she doesn’t just tell the “truth.” She said it would come across as weird because he asked if she had a boyfriend, and it would have killed the conversation—it just wouldn’t have fit if she’d said, “Yeah, I have a boyfriend, and I’m actually married.” as if she says that to scare him off.
I couldn’t understand that, because a few weeks ago, an old school friend (M)—someone I hadn’t been in touch with for years—messaged me to ask how things were going in my life, and my first reaction was “I’m married, have a kid and work sucks”.
I told her there’s nothing strange about it and that I feel like she’s trying to “hide” her current life again.
She then pretty much lost it and told me why I always misunderstand her, why I’m bringing this up—that she regrets giving up all her friends to sit here with me—and why I have a problem with her texting him.
I told her it’s not about her texting him—I even said myself, “Just listen to the audio.” My issue was with the whole “friend and husband” thing.
Well, anyway, we didn’t talk anymore for the rest of the evening.
Don’t get me wrong—I’m not implying that she’s cheating on me or wants to cheat on me or anything like that.
I’m wondering if I overreacted and deserved to get that kind of reaction.
