ER nurse
Was in the ER for opiate withdrawals. I’m bedbound and unable to walk without severe pain and walking is my #1 trigger for PEM. I use incontinence products to avoid walking.
Had to go to the ER, my mom wouldn’t take me. The uber driver did not speak English and I asked if she could go in and ask them for a wheelchair and she said no. So I had to walk myself in.
Told the nurse I couldn’t walk to the bathroom. She said “you can’t walk?” I said “I can walk, but it causes a lot of pain and makes me worse.” She rolled her eyes. I said “if you stepped on glass, you’d be able to walk, but you’d rather avoid it right?” She continued rolling her eyes. Then I said “have you never heard of ambulatory wheelchair users?” And she said “I’ve been a nurse for 25 years, yes I have.” I said “have you heard of ME/CFS.” She said “I’ve heard of a lot of things, doesn’t make it real.”
When will this disease be recognized by healthcare professionals and when will doctors and nurses receive adequate training? I’m always treated like I’m being dramatic and lazy. Yeah, I want to be bedbound at 23 and unable to walk to the bathroom. I do it for fun.
Absolutely infuriating and I have experienced this so many times. “You can’t walk, but you can move your limbs in bed?” Are you serious?
