Not yet an EMT.
I am not certified, yet. I take my NREMT this coming Tuesday and I just completed my EMT class three days ago. But I had something happen today and I want to know what I did wrong, what I did right, what should have happened if I was certified. I'm worried about:
-
Should I have moved the patient? It was not a high speed crash. I'm pretty sure he was having an emergency before the crash and wasn't pushing the brakes or the gas. When the semi started moving again, I believe he just let off the brakes.
-
The scene wasn't safe, but I got into the moving vehicle anyway.
-
I didn't tell anyone to turn off the gas pumps.
-
I didn't tell anyone to move out of the way, I just ran for my car to get my kids out of the way and didn't try to stop the vehicle then.
-
I didn't stay with my own kids after I moved them to safety. This is what I'm most worried about, honestly.
The story...
My three kids, my husband, and I were at a gas station getting gas today. After I put the nozzle in the car, I went back to my driver door and asked everyone in my car to hand me trash so I could put it in the trash bin. While this was happening, an 18-wheeler wrecked into the car on the opposite side of the pump as us. He traveled across on-coming traffic lanes and then hit the car. I walked over to the car and made sure the lady in the car that got hit was okay, when I saw she was just upset (without asking her, just visualizing), I walked over to the driver's side of the semi truck and knocked on the door. I asked the driver if he was okay, but he seemed confused. I asked him if the truck was in park, but he didn't answer. I didn't want to climb in the truck and reach over the driver because I didn't know if he would be aggressive, so I walked over to my husband and told him to go to the passenger side and put the truck in park, as this was happening, the truck began moving forward and all the bystanders started screaming that he was having a seizure. I didn't go back to the truck or look to see if he was actually having a seizure, I ran to my car and moved my it so it didn't get hit or the gas pump fall over and hit my kids that were still in my car. I replaced the gas hose and then jumped in, leaving my husband. My youngest daughter was screaming and crying, my son was yelling we needed to leave, and my oldest daughter was telling me to hurry. When I parked my car away from the semi, I didn't stay with my kids to comfort them, I just ran back over to the semi, climbed into the cab of the truck where the driver was unresponsive and turned off the truck. I did not put the truck in park (my brain wasn't working fast enough to remember where park in a manual was..). I called my husband over and told him to help me get the driver out of the seat because I was scared he would come to and be combative while I was in the cab with him or try to start the truck again. I did not see any physical injuries on him. A lady from the gas station said that we shouldn't move him and my husband told her that I am an EMT and I said dont tell people that because I'm not, but gas station lady listened and my husband and I pulled him out of the truck and put him on the ground where I rolled him to his left side and held his head off the ground until someone brought some towels to put under his head. A nurse (I'm assuming because she was in scrubs) came over and helped. After a few minutes of the driver laying on the ground, the police showed up and me and the nurse just sat with the driver and tried to ask him questions to no avail as he never fully came to. He was breathing deeply using his accessory muscles and had equal pulses radially, but did not speak and his eyes were open but not focused. He did not have any medical jewelry on him. The fire department arrived and then the Ambulance and I got up and asked a police officer if I could leave. He asked what happened, I told him, and then he asked for my identification so I gave it to him. I then left the scene with my family.
After looking back on this, did I do anything right? I'm so scared that I hurt the guy by moving him. I talked to my kids and my youngest (8f) is still shaken up about it and scared to drive around town. My other two think it was exciting now (12f and 9m).
