Switch reqs on a ceiling fan
Hi, I have 3 ceiling fans, all on the same circuit (15A breaker.) They are remote controlled, and syncing the remote to the fan requires turning the power off to the fan, so doing so when they are on the same circuit requires me to basically entirely remove and disconnect each fan one by one. This wasn't an issue on first install because there wouldn't be any need to re-sync once it's done. Sadly, this is not the case - one fan stopped responding, and the manuf reco is to re-sync, which I did, but now all 3 fans are synced to the one remote. :-|
So, I would like to wire a switch inside each fan, so I just need to take the case off and switch off the power just to that fan/fans while I sync each remote.
My question: I feel like I need a switch that is rated to 15A - if I get a 12A power surge on a switch rated for 6A, then it will burn the switch without tripping the breaker right? Or, is that just not how any of that works, and the amps are only drawn, i.e. I only need a switch rated higher A than the fan draws (which is <1A).
TL;DR: Do I need to 15A switch to match the breaker, or just a >1A switch to match the fan draw?
Thanks!
