It's Infuriating That Any Discussion About Islam Immediately Becomes Black and White
I grew up Muslim. And as far as my family and community are concerned I still am. So I understand to an extent why some Muslims and ex-Muslims resent the religion. But anytime anyone tries to discuss Islam in a positive or even neutral light, they get piled on.
Yes religion can be used as a tool of oppression. But it's not like that for everyone. I hate pretending to be a practicing Muslim. The religion does nothing for me. But I've seen what it's done for others.
Unfortunately there are also so many Muslims reinforcing all the negative stereotypes and prejudice that give them a bad name. Because they don't care. They're being "faithful" and "true" to the fundamental aspects of their religion. Especially since they are also benefitting from how it's oppressing others one way or another.
Should little girls be forced to wear hijab? No. Are a girls parents pieces of shit for letting a girl wear one if she wants to? No. Hijab is more than a modesty thing to a lot of women and girls. We can acknowledge this while also acknowledging that it has been used as a tool of oppression.
I think it's prejudiced to see a girl wearing hijab and instantly think to yourself "poor her, she's oppressed".
Like, you can criticize a religion, custom, or culture, without viewing it as some evil entity.
