Is it too late to get into chess?

I feel like since the game has been released for awhile everyone else has been playing for so long and levelled so high. Will the curve to get into chess take awhile and I'll feel left behind the gamers who have been playing for awhile? Or will I be able to level up my pieces pretty quick to a competitive level?
