Why aren’t polygraph tests acceptable to use in the court of law?

In addition to swearing oath, wouldn’t the use of a polygraph test allow for a process that can investigate potentially untruthful statements/testimonies? I understand that even truthful people may fail a polygraph depending on certain variables but we use polygraphs when hiring law enforcement or high government positions and even with criminal investigations.
