How Safe Are Internet Archive Downloads?

I’ve recently been wanting to play some older, more obscure visual novels, and the only place I can find them is the internet archive. I’ve never downloaded games from it before, and the ones I’m wanting don’t have reviews on the upload or anything like that. I know some risk comes with downloading anything online, but if anyone else has ever downloaded from Internet Archive, what do you do to ensure the game doesn’t contain malware and such? I’ve only ever pirated extremely popular visual novels that have common and popular methods of obtaining them, so I’m a bit of a novice when it comes to this stuff.
