Is it true that cheating is extremely common in France?

American currently living in the UK here.

Brits have a stereotype that French people cheat a lot. Anecdotally, I’ve also had a handful of interactions with French people myself where they seemingly downplayed, or even justified, cheating on a partner. Recently I read somewhere that the majority of French men and a third of French women have cheated on a partner at some point in their life.

Is there any truth to this? I never really gave it much thought until recently when I got involved in a situationship with a French woman. She wants a more serious relationship with me, but I’m very hesitant because of my impression of this aspect of French culture.
