Helped with theory and item priority (whirling assault monk)

Using some builds and looking at other people on poe.ninja I have ended up with my current build.

I can do most content well but I want to improve.

How do you improve yourself? I look at builds but trying to understand how to improve myself. What's step 1? 2 and ecetera.

They have added so many different things this season that I'm just learning about because of lack of time to play plus my utter bordem watching a video to tell me how to play.
