Stop letting clients take advantage of you!! Here’s some scripts for setting boundaries
I read this sub constantly and I see how often amazing sitters get taken advantage of and walked all over by demanding owners. I have been on Rover and in the pet industry for a decade now, so I’ve been around the block and know my shit when it comes to this stuff. I have become a pro at navigating awkward, and difficult situations and setting boundaries so I would like to share some scripts!
(House Sitting) How to screen for clients who expect constant care
“Hi [name], thanks so much for reaching out! A little bit about how my house sitting service works: I stay overnight in your home, and tend to your pet and their routines during the day. The majority of my time is spent with your pet, but I may need to step out periodically for scheduled clients during the day. Because of that, pets under my care for my standard care rate do need to be comfortable being independent for [x amount of hours]. If that sounds like a good fit for you and your pet(s), we can go ahead and set up a meet & greet!”
Note: if you do want to offer constant care, you can always add something like “If your pet(s) are unable to be alone for longer than 2hours, let me know, and I can upgrade you to my constant care option”
(Boarding) arrival/departure boundaries:
You can send this right before you book, right after, or a couple days before the booking starts:
“Hi [name], I’m looking forward to caring for [pet name]! I have you scheduled for [x time] for drop off on [x date] and [x time] for pick up on [x date]. Do these exact times still work for you? I wanted to double check ahead of time so you don’t incur any late pick up or drop off fees”
Send this the night before the booking starts:
“Hi [Name], I have the space all ready for [pet’s name(s)] tomorrow. I’m looking forward to seeing you at [agreed drop off time]. If your travel plans change and you need to drop off earlier or later, please message me here first. That way I can make sure I’m home and awake to greet you. Safe travels!”
Late pickup notice to send if the owner hasn’t messaged yet and it’s getting close to pickup time:
“Hi [Name], [pet’s name] has had a great stay and is all packed up for pickup at [agreed upon time]. If you are running behind, please let me know your ETA as soon as you can. Friendly reminder that pick ups delayed more than 30 minutes automatically switch over to an extended care rate of $X per hour to cover the extra care time. See you soon!”
