IIT Bombay/Delhi MBA vs New or Baby IIMs—which is the better choice in 2026?
I don’t think an MBA from a top IIT should be treated as a backup simply because it does not carry the IIM tag.
For me, IIT Bombay’s SJMSOM and IIT Delhi’s DMS would generally rank above most Baby IIMs. Against stronger New IIMs such as Udaipur, Trichy, Raipur or Ranchi, the decision becomes more dependent on career goals.
Why I would consider IIT Bombay or Delhi:
- Strong overall institute brand
- Good access to technology, analytics, product and operations roles
- Location advantage and industry exposure
- Smaller MBA batches in many cases
- Often better value for money
- Opportunity to interact with engineering, technology and startup ecosystems
For example, IIT Bombay lists its total 2026–28 MBA programme fee at about ₹15.56 lakh, while IIM Trichy lists ₹19.5 lakh for its recent PGPM batch.
Why someone may still prefer a New IIM:
- The IIM name is directly linked with management education.
- The curriculum and campus culture are fully MBA-focused.
- Some New IIMs have built strong recruiter and alumni networks.
- They may offer broader general-management opportunities.
- A particular IIM may perform better for your preferred role.
My rough preference would be:
- IIT Bombay/Delhi over most Baby IIMs
- IIT Bombay/Delhi vs stronger New IIMs: compare roles, fees and placements
- Choose the New IIM if it clearly performs better in your target field
I would not decide based only on “IIT versus IIM.” I would compare the last two placement reports, median salary, batch size, summer internships, recruiter list and the roles actually offered.
A famous tag gets attention. The right programme-role match builds the career.
