Rules on reaching over

I’ve played vb for many years and my understanding is as follows:

1. You can contact the ball beyond the plane if the trajectory of the ball is headed towards your side of the court (e.g. arms over when blocking)

2. If not, you can only contact the ball on your side of the net and not reach beyond the plane.

Would appreciate clarification from those well-versed in FIVB rules.
