Bts are hypocrites
BTS's decision honestly feels a little ironic to me. The Grammys introduced a Best Asian Performance category, and suddenly, the conversation became about how they don't want to be separated from other artists because they're Asian. Fair enough, but where was this energy when Asian-specific recognition benefited them, too? That's the part that doesn't really add up to me.
My personal theory is that BTS want to be seen as more than just a K-pop group now, and that's their choice. But acting like an Asian category is somehow beneath them. It feels strange when they've spent years benefiting from platforms that specifically highlighted Asian artists. If anything, this new category could give other Asian acts
Stray Kids, ENHYPEN, TXT, soloists, and many others have a better chance at being recognized instead of competing in categories where international artists rarely get noticed.
Some of the reactions from ARMYs have been even weirder. I've seen people acting like the category was created specifically for BTS, even though that's just speculation. Others are saying the Grammys will lose viewers without them, as if the Recording Academy suddenly forgot how to run an award show. BTS are undeniably one of the biggest K-pop groups ever, but the music industry doesn't stop moving because one artist decides not to participate. If the category helps more Asian artists get recognition, I don't really see that as the disaster some people are making it out to be. Because African artists are squeezed in one category, too. The Grammys has never been for other continents. It was made for American and I mean white Americans.
