Family Dynamics
This one’s more for people who grew up in the church. For context, I’m 18 AFAB (assigned female at birth) and am still living at home. My sister’s 21, and a very active Mormon. She has gone minimal/no contact with my father, and is really banking on being friends with mom- which is what has me questioning how the church has affected this family.
I’ve been researching abuse and have considered that the LDS church may be playing a factor in my parents‘ dynamic? It’s mostly my dad. Man of the house, has told me in middle school that he “owns me” quoting Monson, and generally lacks respect for boundaries (especially around my sister). My mom is slightly better, but still enables my father. Says he’s old, and sick, and always in pain and that’s why he’s so pushy and easily upset. They nearly divorced back in 2020, but didn’t. I recognize both parents are doing their best, but it’s.. done a lot of damage.
From what I can remember, the church would push staying with one person even if things were going south, and looked down upon those who needed to be remarried. Alongside that, I remember men generally having more privileges, different lessons, and being seen as higher than women (though not outright stated). Anyone else experience similar dynamics in their family?
