It's difficult making friends of the same gender.
F18, just graduated high school.
I don't really have any close friends. The only person I consistently talk to is my boyfriend.
Ever since middle school, I've felt like I just can't have a girl best friend, and I don't know why. I know I'm not the most social person, and I think a lot of that comes from how my dad isolated me a lot growing up. Even so, I really do try to put myself out there. I try to join conversations, ask people questions, and be interested in what they have to say.
The problem is that every time I talk, I end up regretting opening my mouth, or I just don't know what to say. I always feel awkward, like I'm doing something wrong socially. At this point, with how all of my friendships have ended, I'm starting to wonder if I'm the problem.
My first best friends in middle school eventually started saying I was annoying. They'd constantly tease and insult me "as a joke," but it got to the point where it didn't feel like joking anymore. I had another close friend who got really into drinking, drugs, and chasing male attention, which just wasn't something I wanted to be around, and instead of talking through our problems, she started posting a bunch of insults to me on social media. Another friend accused me of something I didn't do. I had proof that I was innocent, but she refused to listen and instead told other people her version of the story.
The most recent one, which happened earlier this year, is the one that messed with me the most. She just started making things up about me. She made up lies, told them to our mutual friends, and even laughed about really vulnerable parts of my life. When I finally confronted her, she admitted she did it because she thought our friends liked me more than they liked her. I just don't understand how someone I considered my best friend could do that.
What's confusing is that the acquaintances I do have seem to genuinely like me. Whenever I hear about conversations they've had about me, it's almost always positive. They say nice things about me and think I'm a good person.
But they never actually reach out. No one asks me to hang out. No one texts me first. Most people only talk to me if I'm the last person around. If you think I'm such a great person, then why do I always feel invisible? Why am I always the one who has to make the effort? I don't know if I'm doing something wrong socially that I just can't see, or if I've just had really bad luck with friendships. Will it get better as I shift into adulthood???
