The Devil's Advocate

Modern Mumbai. High rise chambers in Nariman Point by day, the humid underbelly of Dharavi, Bandra back alleys, and private villas in Alibaug by night. The city smells of salt air, diesel, jasmine, and blood. Power is currency, and desire is the only reliable witness.

Ananya Mehra, 34, Married to Rohan Mehra, a soft spoken businessman. They live in a glass apartment overlooking the sea.

By day she is the fierce public defender and high profile counsel who wins cases for the powerless, the wrongfully accused. By night she is the most valuable asset for the Celebrities and crime Bosses. She cleans evidence, coaches alibis, leans on judges with quiet threats. She does not pretend the two sides are separate. She feeds on the contradiction.

Ananya has been working for the Bosses all over the city for six years. It began with one favor to save a client. Now she is their courtroom ghost. She still takes pro-bono cases that matter to her, but every victory for the light is paid for by a darker service. Her marriage is a careful performance. She loves Rohan with practiced passion, lets him believe he is the only man who has ever made her lose control, then leaves the bed at 2 am to meet handlers in parked cars or private clubs.

The plot opens with a high-stakes case. A young activist is accused of murdering a politician’s son. Ananya takes the case publicly, determined to free him. Privately she knows the real killer is among the bosses she promised to save. The Bosses orders her to ensure the activist is convicted so their man walks free. She must destroy the very person she promised to save.

Ananya begins to enjoy the power. She engineers the activist’s downfall with precision while still playing the righteous lawyer in court. The moral rot is intoxicating. Bosses start calling her to debrief after every hearing. These meetings move from hotel suites to the private island near Alibaug. Clothes come off as strategy does.

She starts testing how far she can go. She seduces a key witness for the opposition, records it, and uses the footage to collapse the activist’s defense. The witness is left ruined, Ananya walks away wet and calm. Her dark side is no longer a side,it is becoming the center. She begins to resent Rohan’s softness, the way he still calls her “my pure Ananya.” One night she comes home smelling of another man’s cologne and forces Rohan to take her on the balcony, hard and silent, while she stares at the lights of the city she is selling.

The Bosses demands more. A rival gang’s lawyer is becoming a problem. Ananya is ordered to destroy him professionally and personally. Afterward she realizes she no longer feels guilt, only hunger. Ananya must navigate a city where every ally has a hidden agenda and every courtroom victory could become the evidence that destroys her.

Ananya stops pretending. She still takes the occasional case that looks pure, but only because the contrast makes the darkness sweeter. She becomes the Bosses' official counsel and their most valued weapon. Bosses offers her a permanent place at their side not as mistress, but as partner. She accepts on her own terms that she will never belong to anyone completely. The final scenes show her in a black silk saree at a high-society party hosted by the Bosses with her husband present as the perfect prop, while under the table her fingers are already wet from the knowledge of what she will do later that night.

The final confrontation is not just about survival. It is about deciding whether Ananya will preserve the corrupt balance she helped build or dismantle the empire she spent years protecting, knowing that either choice will cost her everything.

Was Ananya ever serving justice, or was she always serving power?

Duality is constant. Curtroom speeches about justice delivered with the same mouth that will later beg to be used. Mangalsutra as both shield and leash, monsoon nights, Incense mixed with cigarette smoke, the particular shame and thrill of a married woman who still wears sindoor while kneeling for criminal.

I wrote this play for a female lead. Ananya being the strong character in the law field and twisting the law she swore to protect.

Honestly my plays are based on huge themes with multiple characters and scenes. Sexual scenes can happen during the play but it should have some meaning to it. Maybe they are watching someone doing it. Maybe some side characters is talking about it to the main character and they are imagining it.

I prefer when the female characters have strong personality and big roles not just acting naive and getting corrupted.
