Native USDC supply on Base: 4,154,635,170.66 USDC at block 49,360,868

We queried Circle's native USDC contract on Base and got 4,154,635,170.662685 USDC in total supply at block 49,360,868.

The query:

formatUnits(usdc.totalSupply(), usdc.decimals())

Contract binding: usdc = 0x833589fCD6eDb6E08f4c7C32D4f71b54bdA02913 on Base. Two on-chain calls resolved in one multicall round, 282ms total.

Why this number is interesting: it counts only native USDC, the version Circle mints directly on Base. It does not include USDbC, the bridged version backed by tokens locked in the L1 bridge. Native USDC is a direct issuer liability, redeemable 1:1 with Circle, no bridge contract in the trust path.

Our read: native issuance is a stronger adoption signal than bridge TVL. Anyone can bridge funds to a chain and park them. An issuer deploying and minting natively means they expect durable demand there, because supporting native mint and redemption is an ongoing operational commitment.

Limitations, to be honest about what this does and does not show:

  • Single snapshot at one block. No trend line here. A follow-up comparing this against historical blocks would show growth rate, which is the more interesting number.
  • totalSupply() does not distinguish circulating supply from USDC sitting in Circle-controlled or protocol-locked addresses.
  • This does not tell you how much USDbC remains on Base, so it is not a complete picture of all dollar-pegged supply on the chain.

If anyone wants the historical series, the same expression run at past block numbers gets you there.
