Do the SNW authors intend to be faithful to TOS?

Just watched episode 2 of season 4 and realized that Kirk really has a front row seat to whatever is going on between Spock and La’an.
It’s hard to believe that they would just never mention her again when working together unless perhaps the memories are too uncomfortable or painful to delve into.

It feels to me like the only acceptable outcomes are going to be for her to break Spock’s heart and leave or end up dead.

Do I have a bad read on this?
What other ways out of this can you see that would preserve the fact she is never mentioned again?

Or do you think it’s more likely that the writers just don’t care?
