My honest PocketGuard review after eight months, the good and the annoying
I kept seeing people ask whether this app is actually worth it, so here is my honest take after using it for about eight months. For context I do freelance design, some months I clear around 4k and some barely 1500, and I used to hit the last week with no clue if I could cover rent plus eat out. That swing was why I went looking.
The one thing that changed for me is the Leftover number. Its basically one figure telling you what is safe to spend after bills and goals are set aside, and for someone whose pay swings 1500 to 4k that was the only budgeting idea that stuck. I tried spreadsheets and two other apps before and always gave up. This one stuck.
On the stuff people usually ask about. The is pocketguard safe question was my first worry too, and it uses the same bank linking most of these apps do, no issue in eight months. Its the standard read only connection, that link on its own cannot move your money, so it felt fine to me. The recurring detection is what I lean on next, it picks up most of your regular subscriptions and bills and lays out what is coming, so fewer things ambush you. Its not perfect, it missed a $9 storage sub and my annual domain renewal, but it caught Netflix, Spotify, gym, phone, all the monthly ones.
Now the annoying part, because no pocketguard review is honest without one. Categories reset every month, and on a swingy income that reset is a pain, in a 1500 month I want to carry grocery budget over and it takes fiddling. Not a dealbreaker for me but its the first thing I would fix.
On price, since is pocketguard free is probably the other thing you googled. There is a free tier but it is limited, a couple accounts and not much more, and getting in is not instant either, you hit a wall first. As for pocketguard cost, Plus is $12.99 a month or $74.99 a year. I pay yearly and reckon it is worth it, but if you only track one account the free version might do, so thats on you.
So who is it for. If you overspend and want one honest number instead of a fifty row spreadsheet, its genuinely good, and thats the short version of my pocketguard review. If you are the type who likes assigning every single dollar by hand, you will probably find it too hands off. Curious what everyone else landed on, especially anyone who stuck with it longer than me, what worked and what drove you up the wall?
