People only hate data centers because social media tells them to

Society/Culture

I’m from Ashburn, VA, data center capltal of the world. Around 200 of them. 70% of the worlds internet traffic goes through here, and this isn’t a new development. Been this way for 2 decades.

It’s been amazing for our local economy, made us the richest county in the US. Plenty of very high paying jobs to go around, and our local infrastructure is incredibly well funded. No one’s ever had an issue with our digital gold mine until this year, because “chatGBT is using all the water” or whatever the screen told them lmao

Overall my message is that if you want prosperity for your region, don’t turn it away because of a preconceived notion you got from people who have never experienced the thing they hate.

My electricity costs less than the national average, my water is great despite what a woman slinging around a cup of crud and saying “THIS IS WHAT YOU WILL DRINK IN 2030” has to say, and even our CS graduates can find jobs 😂

Bit unfortunate that household essentials like gaming PC with 5080 ti and 64gb DDR5 raised in price, but it ain’t exactly the first time those components have gotten expensive - and last time was far less useful for humanity haha
