I built a lightweight standalone desktop app for Hero Wars Alliance to fix browser memory leaks and slow asset loads! (Linux & Windows)

FEEDBACK

Hey everyone!

If you play Hero Wars Alliance in a web browser during long sessions like I do, you've probably ran into the usual pain points: memory leaks causing sluggish performance over time, assets constantly reloading, or accidentally closing the browser tab mid-game.

To fix this, I built a dedicated, standalone desktop client using Electron. It wraps the web version into a native desktop experience designed specifically for stability, speed, and clean asset caching.

πŸš€ Why use this instead of a browser tab?

  • ⚑ Aggressive Persistent Caching (~5GB): Browsers constantly clear heavy assets from cache. This app uses a dedicated persistent disk partition to keep everything local. Once you click through the in-game menus on your first launch, the full asset cache (~5GB) stays on your drive, making all future launches load almost instantly.
  • πŸ›‘ No Memory Leaks: Say goodbye to the gradual memory bloat and frame drops that happen during multi-hour browser sessions.
  • πŸ’» Lower RAM Footprint: Runs in an isolated, lightweight process using fewer system resources than an open browser tab.
  • πŸ–₯️ True Desktop Experience: Play the game as a dedicated app without tab clutter, accidental misclicks closing the window, or browser notifications.

⌨️ Controls & Shortcuts

  • F11 β€” Toggle borderless Full Screen
  • F1 β€” Toggle the top application menu bar

πŸ“¦ Downloads & Platform Support

Builds are automatically compiled and released via GitHub Actions for both Linux and Windows:

  • 🐧 Linux: Download the .AppImage file, grant executable permissions (chmod +x), and run.
  • πŸͺŸ Windows: Download and run the .exe installer.
