**TL;DR:** Fewer players → worse meta knowledge → worse game quality → even fewer players. It’s a vicious cycle, and supporting Heroes Profile helps break it.

Heroes Profile is back online [today.It](http://today.It) went down yesterday and returned today. My $57 annual crowdfund membership hopefully contributed a small part to keeping it running.

I hopped into Quick Match excited to share the news, but the topic came up on its own — all four random teammates knew the site and used it regularly to look up builds and meta info. This bit of anecdotal evidence says it all: it’s easily the most useful community resource for Heroes of the Storm. It lowers the barrier to learning solid talent builds and understanding the meta, and its value to the community is undeniable.

But here’s the disconnect. All four of them reacted negatively to the crowdfunding announcement:
• “I’d happily donate 5-10€ to a HotS project, but holding the site hostage for money is scummy. I won’t give a cent.”
• “I never pay for Google services” — essentially saying they never pay for online tools or digital content.
• “This site just ruined its own reputation in my eyes.”Some even assumed the owner was trying to profit off a “community project”, with zero awareness that running the site costs real money, every single day.

Here’s the reality: Heroes Profile costs roughly **$800 per month in server costs alone**. The site only came back online once that funding goal was met.A lot of people are calling that price gouging, but that number is already the absolute minimum the owner can run it for.

This isn’t a static webpage. It processes thousands of replay uploads 24/7, pulls match data from the game API, calculates live win rates, talent pick rates and rank distributions, and serves tens of thousands of user queries every day. That requires serious CPU, RAM, database storage and [bandwidth.At](http://bandwidth.At) standard US/EU hosting prices, for a dedicated server that can handle that load — plus growing storage costs, bandwidth redundancy, and basic security to protect user data — $800 is genuinely reasonable.

**And this is the key point: that $800 includes $0 in labor.**All feature development, bug fixes, data maintenance, and patch updates are done for free by the owner as a passion project. The $800 only covers hard infrastructure costs. If the crowdfund falls short, the owner is effectively working full-time on the site *and* paying out of pocket to keep it online.

At the end of the day, this is the same cycle every small-community creator faces:
Give something away for free out of passion, and everyone sings your praises. Admit you can’t keep covering the costs for free, and that goodwill instantly turns to resentment — even hostility. There’s an old Chinese saying: *A single bowl of rice earns gratitude; a bushel of rice breeds resentment*. Give people a small kindness, and they’re thankful. Give it to them forever for free, and they feel entitled to it — angry when it’s taken away.

From Hotslogs shutting down years ago to Heroes Profile struggling now, it’s the same story.Think about it: the teammates we all run into with terrible builds and poor game sense exist largely because of information gaps.

If everyone had easy access to meta builds and stats, overall match quality and game experience would improve for everyone.Lose our stats sites, and the information gap widens. A worse game environment drives more players away. Fewer players means fewer people to support community tools. It’s a vicious cycle with no end.We don’t want to see another Hotslogs situation.

Supporting Heroes Profile is ultimately supporting our own game experience.

Is the entitlement mindset killing our best HotS community tool?
