Yoga pro 9i overheating and screen not turnign back on after sleep mode.

Hey everyone,

I'm having a really frustrating issue with my laptop and hoping someone here has experienced this or knows a fix/workaround.

1. Extreme Overheating & Black Screen on Wake

  • Setup: Laptop is plugged in on my desk.
  • The Issue: When I step away and the screen turns off (or enters sleep/display-off mode), it fails to wake up when I return.
  • Symptoms:
    • The screen remains completely black and unresponsive.
    • The keyboard backlight either doesn't turn on at all or turns on briefly before staying off.
    • Crucially, the laptop gets extremely hot to the touch while stuck in this state, as if the CPU/GPU are running at maximum load while the lid is shut or display is off. The charger block gets very hot as well.
  • Current Workaround: Pressing keys or the power button for 5–10 minutes rarely works. The only reliable fix is holding down the power button to perform a hard reset, waiting for it to cool down a bit, and powering it back on.

It feels like Modern Standby / Sleep mode is failing to communicate properly with the display driver—preventing the screen from turning back on while leaving background processes locked in a high-power state.

2. Trackpad Unresponsive After Wake

  • The Issue: Even when the system does wake up or turn back on, the trackpad frequently stops working properly.
  • Symptoms: Either half of the trackpad becomes unresponsive, or the entire trackpad stops working altogether.
  • Current Workaround: Closing the lid, waiting a few seconds, and reopening it usually forces the trackpad to re-enable itself, but it happens repeatedly.

System Details & Steps Taken:

  • Power State: Always connected to OEM charger.
  • Symptoms point to: Windows Modern Standby (S0 Low Power Idle) issues, ACPI/power management glitches, or display/chipset driver freezes.

Has anyone encountered this specific combination of black screen + severe overheating in sleep + trackpad drops on modern Lenovo laptops?

  • Is this a known BIOS/Modern Standby issue?
  • Should I disable Fast Startup, tweak ACPI settings in BIOS, or roll back specific display drivers?
