Extreme optimists are out of their minds.
Extreme optimists the ones who preach toxic positivity have a view of the world that is so distorted it's almost dangerous. For them, life is simple: if you're sad, you just need to stop. If you go through trauma, you need to get up and become a better person. If you're depressed, it's because you're not strong enough.
They don't realize that life doesn't work that way. Life is made up of positive moments and negative moments. And some negative moments bury you alive. You can't just 'decide' to overcome trauma as if it were a choice. Not everyone processes pain the same way. And expecting everyone to react the same way to devastating experiences is an act of arrogance and ignorance.
What I hate the most is toxic positivity. Those phrases like: 'Don't be sad,' 'Look on the bright side,' 'It happened for a reason.' These words don't help. They erase people's pain. They make them feel wrong for experiencing human emotions.
And then, when pessimists speak, when they tell the truth, when they show that life isn't all roses and sunshine, they get attacked. They get labeled as negative, as weak. But pessimists, in their philosophy, have told more truths than extreme optimists. They had the courage to look reality in the face, without filters.
A sign of true maturity is understanding that not all traumas are overcome. Not all wounds heal. Not all people can get back up after a fall. And no one has the right to tell someone else how they should process their pain.
True strength isn't always smiling. It's having the courage to admit that sometimes, you can't smile. It's having the courage to be sad without having to justify yourself.
That's why, in my opinion, extreme optimists should simply be removed from serious discussions. Not because they don't have the right to speak, but because their way of speaking is harmful. Because they don't bring reflection, they bring lies. And because those who have truly suffered know that happiness isn't an obligation. It's an exception
