Should I follow my Master's thesis topic when applying for a PhD?

I studied Ecology, and I'm interested in many different subjects. They all seem interesting to me, and I know I'll do my best if I get accepted because I just love ecology in general. I also think all ecosystems are connected, so I don't see why I should only focus on one topic.

I'm wondering if applying for PhDs that are different from my Master's thesis could affect my application or my chances of getting accepted.
