Laser designation in BF6

How useful is laser designation for you? When I play Recon, the majority of my time is spotting via Drone, then using the laser for spotting/painting targets.

Even if I paint like crazy, people doesn´t seems to use the improved lock-ons very much. I am aware, that one of the last patches cut the painted timer in half or something close to that. Is that the reason?
