Anxiety, depression and insomnia are modern medical terms. These expressions are not found in the classical texts of Vedic astrology. The sages instead described the condition of the mind through terms such as *Mano Dukha*, *Bhaya*, *Chitta Bhrama*, *Ashanti* and *Nidra*. Although the language is different, the principles remain applicable while examining the horoscope.

The Moon is the chief significator of the mind. Both *Phaladeepika* and *Saravali* treat the Moon as the indicator of mental disposition. When the Moon is under the influen of Saturn, Rahu, Ketu or Mars and receives little support from benefic planets **(Infact the drihshty make significant role)**, the mind often becomes restless. Such a combination may give fear, emotional instability, excessive worry or disturbed thinking, particularly during the periods of the afflicting planets.

Saturn is another planet that deserves careful attention. Mantreswara, in *Phaladeepika*, repeatedly associates Saturn with grief, fear, misery and prolonged suffering. When Saturn forms a close relationship with the Moon or influences the Fourth House, mental peace may gradually decline. The native may appear successful outwardly but continue to struggle with inner dissatisfaction and loneliness.

The Fourth House represents *Sukha*, the happiness that arises from within. *Bhavartha Ratnakar* gives considerable importance to this house while judging peace of mind and domestic happiness. If the Fourth House, its lord and the Moon are all afflicted, emotional contentment becomes difficult to sustain, regardless of material comforts.

The Twelfth House governs sleep. Disturbance to this house, its lord or the Moon often coincides with restless nights and lack of proper sleep. In the *Roga Adhyaya* of *Phaladeepika*, Saturn is also connected with *Vata* disorders. Many traditional astrologers consider this principle while examining nervous disturbances and chronic sleep related problems.

Rahu has a powerful influence upon the mind. The classical texts describe Rahu as producing illusion, fear and confusio. When Rahu closely influences the Moon, the native may become prone to overthinking, imaginary fears or emotional uncertainty. A severely afflicted Mercury can further increase nervousness, indecision and mental agitation.

It is equally important to understand what the classics do not say. Neither *Phaladeepika*, *Bhavartha Ratnakar*, *Saravali* nor *Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra* teaches that a single yoga is sufficient to declare anxiety, depression or insomnia. Such conclusions cannot be drawn from one planetary combination alone. The strength of the Moon, the condition of the Fourth and Twelfth Houses, the influence of Saturn, Rahu and Mercury, the operating dasha and the overall promise of the horoscope must always be judged together.

The ancient seers never encouraged mechanical astrology. Every horoscope possesses its own strengths and weaknesses. Sound judgement comes from weighing the entire chart rather than relying upon one isolated combination. That is the method followed throughout the classical literature, and it remains the safest approach for every serious student of astrology.
