I wish I knew what other people’s lives were like

Need Support

I had this exchange with my dad a few days ago, and I’m feeling lost. I want my dad to understand me, and I can’t get it. I don’t know what to do. I wish I could see how other families treated each other, so I had something to compare to.

I feel overwhelmed and bad about myself for where my life is. I don’t know how to get relief.

Me:
I love you dad. I’m sorry things have gone so badly, and I care about how you’re doing. I know life has been difficult, and it hurts a lot that you’ve had to go through so much of it alone. I know you’ve carried so much, and that you wanted to be a good dad. I hope you’re keeping yourself safe.
Me:
I don’t judge you for how overwhelmed you’ve been.
Dad:
Really glad to hear from you. Not sure what to say.
Me:
I’ve been feeling pretty lonely lately. It made me think of you going through the same thing, and it hurts. I’m sorry.
Dad:
What do your work schedule look like? You should spend some time with me.
Me:
Well, I might at some point, but I have to say, I have a lot of complicated feelings, and it won’t be so easy for me.
Dad:
Ok. I think you should sort out your feelings. Obviously I care a great deal for you and your welfare, but this exchange has been costly for me. Perhaps you shouldn’t contact me again until you have resolved your feelings.
