Genuine Question

I've gone to a lot of shopping malls and one thing always sticks with me the second i leave. Why do the prices never round up?

They will sell 'x' for $499, for me that just looks ugly. Just sell it for $500 why always subtract 1? Or let's say 'y' is sold for $49.99 why not 50? Why subtract a cent?

Any answers?
